v INTRODUCTION The List of Country and Capital Names aims to show how these names are standardized in the Greek language, and includes the names of the Member States of the United Nations and their capitals: (i) in Greek, (ii) in roman characters and (iii) in English. The English name of each country is also included in the form which is used by the United Nations, for the purposes of identification of the Greek and the foreign name. For each country the following entries are included: • Serial number. • ISO 3166 code. • Short name (usual name), in alphabetical order, based on the Greek alphabet. • Full name (complete formal name). • Capital name. Note: The gender of the Greek names is stated with the article in parenthesis: (ο) masculine, (η) feminine, and (το) neuter. Plural: (οι) masculine, and (τα) neuter. The above data can be easily found in lists of country and capital names which are available at the United Nations. The international standardization of names, in the form used by the United Nations, is fully supported. Map publications by our official services will use this international standardization. But official maps in the Greek language will use the Greek standardization of names, as this is illustrated in this List. The names in these forms will also be used in educational atlases, educational geography books, encyclopedias and other scientific works. In encyclopedias, the national name in the roman transcription will also be used next to the Greek form, for identification purposes. The standardization of foreign names in the Greek language follows these principles: 1. Names which were earlier represented in the Greek language in accordance to the morphological system of the language and are currently in use are preserved in that form. Changing these names, from which other derivatives are formed, would decay the Greek language. Such names are the following: Αίγυπτος, Βέλγιο, Γαλλία, Γερμανία, ∆ανία, Ελβετία, Ιαπωνία, Ισπανία, Ιταλία, Ολλανδία, Ουγγαρία, Πολωνία, Σουηδία, Άγκυρα, Βαγδάτη, Βερολίνο, Βιέννη, Βουδαπέστη, Λονδίνο, Παρίσι, Ρώμη and Τεχεράνη. 2. Foreign names are translated into the Greek language as it is done in other languages. Such names are : Άγιος Μαρίνος, Ηνωμένα Αραβικά Εμιράτα, Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες Αμερικής, Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο, Ισημερινός, Λευκορωσσία, Νέα Ζηλανδία, and Νήσοι Σολομώντος. 3. Foreign names with no tradition into the Greek language are represented according to their pronunciation. Their transcription follows the phonetic correspondences between the foreign pronunciation and the phonetic system of the standard Greek language, and not that of the Cypriot dialect. For official use, foreign names will have only one representation in the Greek language, in writing as well as in speech. Such names are: Αζερμπαϊτζάν, Μπαγγλαντές, Νήσοι Μάρσαλ, Τατζικιστάν, Τσαντ, Αμπιτζάν, Μπριτζτάουν, Τζιμπουτί, Φίτζι, Τζακάρτα, Μοκαντίσο, and Ουάσιγκτων . 4. At the transcription of foreign names into the Greek language, the image of the original is preserved, such as Κονακρύ instead of Κονακρί , Μαλαισία instead of Μαλεσία .
